Woman- From Sita to Nina...

Posted by Ordinary Soul

Women's Day! I see a strange logic that I found the extremely creative and brilliant take on Ramayana by Nina Paley during this time. "Sita sings the Blues" is one of the most original works of art I've ever came across. It is wonderfully feminist as it speaks for women across the centuries who have been victims of men's quest for power, freedom and wealth. While Sita went through endless suffering and liberated herself through self- extinction at the end, Nina could use all her pain, agony, loneliness, anger and frustration to fire her creativity and create something so wonderful as this. Considering that, her ex-husband is not as despicable as Rama :)

I can't tell what is the most amazing thing about the film- being such a terrific creation or the fact that it is distributed free under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License, which means that anyone can "copy, share, publish, archive, show, sell, broadcast, or remix". Various versions with different qualities can be download from here. I think this is a move that can trigger a revolution in the way we concieve, produce and distribute movies.

More about Nina's Sita later. But on this Women's day, I guess Nina epitomises today's woman, e-nabled and making her way through a harsh world led by the light of her own creativity.

Brilliant movie indeed. The 'ideal' man, the 'ideal' way of society, has tended to leave women as its unfortunate victims, all through history.

The free distribution part of it....Just today morning, while struggling with a proprietary software tool based on a open-source one, i was wondering how it happened - that the open source tool was so easy to use, so simple and straightforward, while this one had you cursing all through.. there's surely something wonderful in this new way...

watched it twice peevs. had heard abt it once, ven i was back home-- from d trivandrum edition of metroplus. bt havnt really got d chance to watch it until u gave me d link.
